Luella Gear
Luella Gear, born in New York, was a talented comedienne whose sharp humor brought life to Broadway musical comedies and revues for five decades, even as she made limited appearances in film. After completing her education at Spencer School, she pursued acting training, making her stage debut in 1917. Gear enjoyed a series of notable triumphs on stage, most famously in the parody "Life Begins at 8:40" (1934-35) and "Streets of Paris" (1939-40), where she showcased her versatility by taking on multiple roles.
Known for her distinctive screen presence, Gear often portrayed witty, sophisticated socialites or the clever confidante of the leading lady. During World War II, she dedicated herself to entertaining American troops in the South Pacific while touring with the USO in the comedy "Count Me In." Following the war, her standout performance as Julia Ward McKinlock in the beloved romantic comedy "Sabrina Fair" on Broadway (1953-54) marked a significant moment in her career. In the early 1950s, Gear also ventured into television, making guest appearances that highlighted her enduring talent and charm. Her legacy as a sharp-witted performer remains influential in the world of comedic theatre.
