Gaining recognition for his performances, East garnered over 3,000 votes in a 1916 competition hosted by Picturegoer magazine to identify the "Greatest British Film Player," highlighting his popularity during the silent film era.
In addition to his acting achievements, East played a pivotal role in the establishment of Neptune Studios in Borehamwood, a location that would later evolve into the renowned Elstree Studios, known for producing iconic films. Despite his early success, East's career faced a steep decline, which culminated in his final film appearance in "Owd Bob," released in 1924. Tragically, John M. East passed away later that same year, marking the end of a remarkable yet turbulent career in the entertainment industry.
