Set in 1959, two actresses leverage support from U.S. troops in Asia and back home to launch a charity for neglected mixed-race orphans. This initiative gives rise to Childhelp, which eventually establishes multi-disciplinary centers for abused and neglected children in America. Among the children is Jacob Fletcher, a bright boy traumatized by his abusive stepfather, a lawyer who reclaims him after a ten-month prison sentence. His peers also bear harrowing experiences, but the dedicated staff on the former farm employs animal therapy to help them heal and find hope.
