Marine Sergeant John Stryker, grappling with his own inner turmoil, is both reviled and feared by his troops, who perceive him as a merciless tyrant. As they land on the beaches of Iwo Jima, however, the soldiers gradually come to realize the harsh discipline Stryker enforces is rooted in a desire to prepare them for the brutal realities of war. Through intense training and a relentless approach, he aims to mold them into resilient fighters, ultimately earning their respect in the face of overwhelming challenges.
