In 1931, a merchant ship docked in South America becomes the backdrop for tension when a young woman, played by Diane Cilento, embarks as a passenger. Her presence stirs unease among the superstitious crew. Virtuous sailor Anthony Steel steps in to defend her against the unwanted advances of the predatory captain, portrayed by Peter Finch. As the voyage unfolds, the clash between honor and desire reveals the complexities of human nature amid the vast ocean.
