A young, ailing priest arrives in the quaint French town of Ambricourt, eager to serve but quickly met with disdain from the locals. His ascetic lifestyle and introverted nature alienate him, leaving him an outsider among the community’s clergy. At a nearby girls' school, he faces ridicule during Bible studies, further isolating him. When he attempts to mediate a family dispute, his intervention spirals into a scandal, deepening his struggles. As his health deteriorates, the priest grapples with a crisis of faith, questioning his purpose in this unwelcoming environment.
