Created by Brock Yates as a protest against the then-current 55 mph speed limit in the U.S., the race honors Erwin G. "Cannonball" Baker, a legendary figure who famously traversed the nation on his motorcycle in the 1920s. The film features a colorful cast of characters, many of whom embody clever schemes and antics reminiscent of actual Cannonball racers from the event's storied history.
