Lt. Dave Robicheaux, a detective in New Iberia, Louisiana, investigates the murder of a local sex worker, suspecting mobster Julie (Baby Feet) Balboni, a co-producer of a Civil War film, is involved. Compounding the mystery, Elrod Sykes, the film's star, discovers another body in the Atchafalaya Swamp, prompting Robicheaux to dig deeper. He suspects this second corpse might belong to a black man he witnessed being murdered decades earlier. As the investigations intertwine, Robicheaux confronts his past while unraveling a web of crime and corruption.
