Iwane Sakazaki returns home only to be thrust into tragedy when two childhood friends are killed. Heartbroken, he abandons his fiancée Nao and becomes a wandering, masterless samurai. Settling in Edo, Iwane spends his days filleting eels and nights safeguarding Imazuya, a respected money exchanger. His calm demeanor and honorable conduct earn him the community's trust. However, when he uncovers a plot against Imazuya linked to a new government monetary system, Iwane resolves to defend the very people who have welcomed him, igniting a fierce battle for justice and loyalty.
