Aspiring architect Tom Thompson receives shocking news from the enigmatic Ruth Abernathy: his best friend, Bill, has committed suicide. Confused, Tom realizes he’s never met Bill, and his friends doubt the claim. Ignoring the absurdity, he agrees to deliver the eulogy at Bill's funeral, leading to an unexpected encounter with Ruth, who turns out to be Bill's provocative mother.
