Initially titled "English Apocalypse," the film’s name comes from a 17th-century alchemical text, likening it to the elusive philosopher’s stone that transmutes base metals into precious ones. Jarman aimed to create an ambient video experience, similar to ambient music, intended to enrich the viewer's environment.
