Thirteen men faced murder charges, and although nine were ultimately acquitted, their relief was short-lived. The threat of vigilantism loomed large, as a series of brutal lynchings revealed that the community posed as much danger as the corrupt authorities, highlighting a grim narrative of injustice and racial tension.
