Danny Fisher, a troubled youth, faces expulsion from high school and walks away from his job as a busboy in a nightclub. When an opportunity to showcase his singing talent arises, he quickly captivates the audience. However, local crime boss Maxie Fields sees potential in Danny and offers him a gig at his club, The Blue Shade. Unwilling to compromise his integrity, Danny turns down the offer, but Fields is persistent and determined to draw him into the seedy underbelly of the nightlife world.
