Jacques Collin, notorious criminal known as Trompe la mort or abbot Carlos Herrera, breaks free from prison. His path crosses with Lucien de Rubempré, a passionate and vulnerable young man who falls into despair after a rejection. Moved by Lucien's plight, Vautrin decides to mentor him, determined to steer him toward happiness. To achieve this, he orchestrates elaborate schemes alongside a motley crew of cunning thieves, navigating a treacherous world of deception and ambition in the pursuit of a brighter future for Lucien.
