When James reveals to his mother, Audrey, that he is gay, it challenges her self-image as a progressive and accepting parent. A businesswoman from San Diego, Audrey is taken aback by the revelation. The situation escalates when James requests her to journey to Arkansas to inform his partner's estranged mother, Luanne, about her son's AIDS diagnosis. As Audrey and Luanne confront their biases, they gradually learn to connect over their shared anxieties, aspirations, and love for their sons, fostering an unexpected bond between them.
