Katherine, a young maid, lives on a remote farm with her older companion, Hester, and Hester's father, Francis. Overwhelmed by her responsibilities, Katherine dreams of escape. However, Hester develops feelings for her and promises to ease her workload to keep her close. Following Francis's death, Hester opts to sell the farm for money, relocating them to a modest cottage on the property. With hopes of traveling to Europe, their plans are shattered by a tragic accident and the loss of their funds, leaving both women to confront a bleak future.
