The council kicks off a gardening contest, promising a year of free rent to the winners, which inspires the neglected gardens of the Chattersworth estate to transform into stunning displays. Determined to win, Carol revitalizes the Gallagher's rundown yard into a beautiful oasis. Meanwhile, Veronica is eager to spruce up their garden, but Kev is resistant until he meets Tommy from the council. They impulsively “borrow” a Diana Memorial Garden to enhance their yard. Carol sees this as a rivalry, and when the garden is vandalized, tensions escalate between the two families. It’s later discovered that local troublemakers caused the damage, but that doesn’t ease the conflict. Meanwhile, Shelia heads to a hospice to care for her ailing mother, leaving Frank to manage baby Nigel and Delia.
