In February 1909, the unyielding Chiricahua Apache medicine man Geronimo found himself on his deathbed. Calling for his nephew, he confided, “I never should have surrendered. I should have battled until I was the last one standing.” This moment revealed the deep regret of a man whose relentless fight against seemingly insurmountable challenges baffled not only his adversaries in Mexico and the United States but also many of his own Apache kin.
