Steerpike secures his position as Barquentine's right-hand man, overseeing the castle's ceremonies. He deceives everyone by imprisoning Clarice and Cora, making it appear they have died, and eliminates Nannie Slagg. Meanwhile, he continues his courtship of Fuchsia. Titus starts his schooling in the castle's neglected institution, while Prunesquallor's sister, Irma, develops feelings for the new headmaster, Professor Bellgrove. As time passes, Titus grows increasingly resentful of the castle's traditions, directing his anger toward Steerpike. He discovers a hidden passage that leads beyond the castle, where he encounters the banished Flay for the first time.
