The tragic Cavalese cable car disaster took place on February 3, 1998, near the Italian ski resort town of Cavalese, situated in the Dolomites, approximately 40 km northeast of Trento. This catastrophic event, distinct from a previous cable car incident in 1976, resulted in the loss of 20 lives. The calamity unfolded when a U.S. military aircraft severed a cable that was crucial for supporting a gondola of the aerial tramway, leading to the devastating plunge of the gondola and its passengers.
