Sawara: Festival Floats Keeping Ties Alive (S10E24)

S10E24

Sawara is situated in the northeast of Chiba Prefecture, approximately 70 kilometers east of Tokyo. Its advantageous position along a tributary of the Tone River allowed it to thrive as a vital hub for freight transport by the 18th century. For the past 300 years, Sawara has celebrated its vibrant festivals twice a year, in July and October. Supported by affluent merchants, these festivals evolved into grand events showcasing 24 magnificent floats. Now recognized as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, the Sawara Grand Festival is explored by Saskia Thoelen in this episode of Journeys in Japan, where she meets the skilled artisans and local residents who bring the celebration to life.
