Abel Goss, the wedding photographer for Lucas, is in North Fork capturing a portrait of Mark in the street. Spotting Colonel Whiteside and his accomplice Jamison, Goss recognizes them as the brutal captors from his time in a POW camp. When Goss attempts to kill them, Lucas intervenes, but Goss vows vengeance. Whiteside had planned to confront Goss, with Jamison positioned in an upstairs hotel room to shoot if necessary. In a surprising turn, Whiteside is shot in the back without firing his own weapon. Goss is arrested, and during the trial, Lucas and Mark present conflicting accounts. Mark reenacts the scene, and Lucas supports him with Goss's photographic negative of Mark.
