As Homo sapiens arrived in prehistoric Europe, they encountered Neanderthals. The two human species shared enough similarities to interbreed and both produced intricate tools. However, as the population of Homo sapiens grew in Europe, they gained the upper hand. The Neanderthals found themselves outnumbered and eventually overwhelmed. From that point forward, Homo sapiens have inhabited Europe and the rest of the world without competition from Neanderthals.
