Today, Lyon ranks as the third-largest city in France, but in ancient times, it held the title of the largest. Known as Lugdunum, it served as the capital of the Gauls. From the close of the first century BC through the second century AD, the city saw the construction of numerous impressive monuments, establishing it as a grand display of Roman culture in the territories that Julius Caesar had conquered.
