Sergeant Merton is in a relationship with Vivienne Keen, but after a night out together, she accuses him of stealing her purse. Merton staunchly denies the claim and is placed on suspension while an investigation is conducted. Things take a turn for the worse when the purse turns up in his apartment. Compounding the issue, a similar accusation had been made against him a decade ago, though that case was ultimately closed. PC Bradley believes in Merton's innocence and decides to conduct his own unofficial investigation, risking his own job. Meanwhile, Bernie Scripps has been acting unusually, frequently visiting Dr. Summerbee, which worries Vernon, who fears Bernie may be suffering from severe depression.
