Bernini (S01E02)

S01E02

Born in Naples, Bernini showcased remarkable talent from a young age, eventually becoming a leading figure in the 17th-century Roman art scene. His creations embodied the Baroque style, with his sculptures, church designs, and urban planning visible throughout the city. In addition to sculpting, he was also a painter, playwright, and designer for theatre and costumes. Bernini enjoyed the patronage of various Popes; Pope Gregory XV knighted him, while Pope Urban VIII became his close friend. However, jealousy led him to violently confront his mistress over her affair with his brother, tarnishing his reputation. His bell towers for St. Peter's Cathedral also faced issues starting in 1641. Nevertheless, he made a comeback with his renowned masterpiece, The Ecstasy of St. Theresa, in 1652.
