No one chooses the circumstances of their birth. We arrive in a body, with a family, a nation, and a history that shape our lives, influenced by countless factors that determine our relationships, successes, and identities. For adopted individuals, however, their backstory becomes a blend of their birthplace and the environment they grow up in. Danny Bowien, for example, was born in Korea but spent just three months there before being adopted by American parents in Oklahoma—devout, hardworking people. While Danny adapted seamlessly to suburban life in middle America, traces of his origins lingered both on the surface and deep within him.
