Van returns home from Denver nursing a painful butt injury, prompting playful teasing from his family. Seeking solace, he retreats to his room with a donut-shaped cushion. Reba and Cheyenne accompany him to the doctor for X-rays, where they discover that while his injury is minor, he has developed a rare spinal condition that could prevent him from playing football. Anxious about losing his identity, Van's spirits lift when he receives a $100,000 buyout check from Denver. In a bid to reclaim his former glory, he starts splurging on lavish gifts for his family. Reba confronts him about his spending spree, but after receiving an extravagant gift herself, she momentarily loses sight of her concerns.
