The documentary exploring the experiences of unemployed individuals makes its way to Hull, a city grappling with high unemployment and some of the lowest weekly earnings in the UK. Sixteen-year-old Rebecca is anticipating her first child with her boyfriend, Sonny, who is determined to secure a job before the baby arrives. Meanwhile, Rebecca's foster mother, Anita, worries about affording her home once her children leave. Gordon, who hasn’t been employed in many years, shares his deep political beliefs regarding the barriers to employment faced by him and countless others in northern England.
