The 918th faces a daunting assignment at an aircraft factory in the Rhone Valley, located 120 miles from fighter cover and surrounded by 500 anti-aircraft guns, pushing the bombers to their fuel limits. With at least three squadrons of enemy fighters expected, the bombers will have little fuel to maneuver. A thick fog sets in, forcing them to stand down for three days, and the mounting tension is driving the crew to distraction. Tom Lockridge, who has completed 24 missions but is currently hospitalized with hepatitis, remains alongside Sergeant Rutherford, the last two original crew members. Major Kaiser wishes to keep Lockridge in the hospital longer, but Lockridge is eager to finish his tour.
