While visiting his cousin Mary, Jay Leno drops by the Waterfront Bar, but Munch and Bayliss hesitate to approach him. As the new year begins, Brodie starts filming the detectives' work. A sniper unleashes terror on the city, executing victims every eight hours and leaving cryptic clues in the form of Hangman puzzles. Bayliss, the lead investigator, grapples with back pain that raises concerns about a recommended surgery. To alleviate his discomfort, he relies on muscle relaxants. A suspect is cornered, but tragically, he shoots himself before arrest. Meanwhile, Russert faces demotion due to Barnfather's dissatisfaction with her handling of the case.
