Seventeen-year-old Tod Dortmunder, a young delinquent, is sent to live with his grandparents in Walnut Grove after his mother can no longer manage his aggressive attitude. As Tod's violent tendencies escalate, he is caught stealing a watch from Charles, prompting his grandparents to seek Charles' assistance out of concern for their own safety. Charles steps in as a positive influence, and it appears that Tod is beginning to change for the better. However, hidden traumas from Tod's past emerge when he shatters the gift Charles gave him, revealing the deeper issues he faces.
