Nicholas and Susan encounter Merle the Pearl, a player from a nearby minor league baseball team. Nicholas is feeling down about his girlfriend relocating and hopes that meeting Merle will leave a lasting impression on her before she departs. Meanwhile, Tom, annoyed by the ongoing gas shortage, decides to invest in a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle. As the day unfolds, Merle develops a crush on Susan, while Nicholas experiences the thrill of his first kiss.
