The Sterlings begin their new lives in the farming community of Tarka, adopting the surname Hardin for protection after acquiring a crystal from Commander Kroll. Trace Hardin (formerly Sterling) takes a carefree approach to his studies, resulting in poor grades and ultimately receiving a yellow slip, which leads to his conscription into the Zone Troopers. As Trace grapples with the reality of a lifelong commitment to the Troopers, he desperately searches for a way to break free from this fate.
