As Steven undergoes surgery, the family struggles to hold onto hope for his recovery. When the procedure stretches past the anticipated five hours, anxiety fills the waiting area. Alex, feeling particularly anxious, becomes self-absorbed in his worries, convinced he may have inherited a weak heart while futilely trying to find his pulse. Lauren helps him see that he’s using his own health concerns as a distraction from the pain he truly feels for his father. Meanwhile, the Keatons find comfort and support from Mrs. Hobart and Mr. Meyers, who are also waiting for their spouses in surgery.
