However, on April 4, 1975, the inaugural flight of this mission ended in disaster when a Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, with 314 individuals on board, crashed during a desperate emergency landing at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in South Vietnam, resulting in the tragic loss of 138 lives.
