Throughout the era of white settlement, various individuals, both virtuous and nefarious, have greatly influenced the lives of the first Australians. Among them, Constable Willshire, a violent police officer backed by ambitious pastoralists, wreaks havoc in the Arrernte nation of Central Australia. While the authorities choose to ignore his actions, telegraph operator Frank Gillen intervenes to put a stop to him. In addition to this, Gillen leaves behind an invaluable legacy through his detailed documentation of the Arrernte people's culture and traditions.
