Carter arrives back from Africa and heads directly to Abby's hospital room. However, Abby's initial reaction is to demand her key back, displaying a frosty attitude towards him throughout the day. The atmosphere shifts when new medical student Neela Rasgotra answers a call for Carter, delivering the devastating news that Luka has died. Grief-stricken, Carter resolves to return to the Congo to retrieve Luka's body. Meanwhile, Neela struggles on her first day in the ER, clashing with Chen after Pratt attempts to flirt with her. Gallant, now a fully qualified doctor, steps in to mentor her.
