Michael Portillo continues his extensive journey across Vietnam on the Unification Railway, traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. Departing from the city still affectionately known as Saigon, he visits the fishing port of Phan Thiet, where he explores the process of creating Vietnam’s renowned fish sauce. In the Annamite Mountains near Da Nang, he mingles with contemporary Vietnamese vacationers in a whimsical replica of a medieval French village. Finally, in Hoi An, the hub of tailoring, Michael learns about the favorite delicacy of local silkworms and observes Cham weavers crafting their unique brocade.
