In July 1943, Italy turned its back on Germany, leading to Mussolini's arrest. By early September, the newly formed Italian government reached a ceasefire with the Allies. However, since early August, German forces had been making significant gains across the country. On September 9th, British and American troops launched Operation "Avalanche" near Salerno, aiming to liberate southern Europe. They faced fierce resistance from German soldiers and formidable defensive positions. The ensuing battles became some of the most brutal clashes of World War II.
