The navy quickly summons Boyington and fellow squadron leaders, instructing them to select five men for a classified mission that involves flying until their fuel runs out and then ditching in the ocean, waiting for a rescue. Frustrated, Boyington devises a different strategy and rallies his unconventional crew. However, he grapples with whether the greater threat lies in flying over numerous Japanese carriers or in his team's clashes with the rigid, sharply dressed Navy officers who adhere strictly to protocol.
