When the Chief forbids Samantha from going out with a boy, Nell takes the opportunity to share her story of how she came to be a second mother to the girls. Back in 1974, Nell is performing in California when Margaret, who remembers her from a previous show, catches her act. After a strange encounter with her boss, Nell leaves her job, and Margaret invites her to stay at home. Once there, Nell ends up sleeping in Carl's room, shocking him when he finds her in his bed. As Carl grows frustrated with Nell's lack of a job, an opportunity in Bakersfield arises. However, when Margaret reveals she is dying and wants Nell to care for the girls, Nell chooses to stay and support them instead of pursuing her career.
