Dan Jones embarks on a journey along the ancient Roman thoroughfare known as Stane Street, stretching approximately sixty-seven miles from London to Chichester. As he traverses this historic path, he reflects on the departure of the Romans from Britain in the early fifth century AD, a time when their empire faced threats from northern European tribes. Ironically, the roads designed for conquest became the very routes for their retreat.
