Upon discovering that his testimony could lead to the conviction of someone he believes is innocent, Wolfe storms out of the courtroom in a fit of contempt. Accompanied by Archie and pursued by Inspector Cramer, Wolfe delves into a tangled web of blackmail. Armed with fresh evidence, he makes his way back to the trial, much to the irritation of the prosecuting attorney.
