Paul Castellano, the notorious New York mob leader, was assassinated in 1985. Although he had earned the disdain and skepticism of many within his own ranks, the Gambino crime family, he nonetheless ascended to the top position. His rise to power was marked by contentious and often contentious circumstances, making his leadership far from universally accepted.
