Elfreida Detweiler has grown up under the harsh rule of her father, a bitter old German immigrant who resents her existence because she is not a son and blames her for her mother’s death during childbirth. In a bid to prove her worth, she challenges Jim Austin, a young man who has developed feelings for her, despite her father's disdain for him. Johnny attempts to intervene, but Elfreida dares him to a gunfight at noon the following day. Caught in a bind, he struggles with the idea of fighting a girl. Despite the somber themes, the episode maintains a humorous tone throughout.
