Misato leads Shinji, along with his friends Touji and Kensuke, to a colossal UN naval convoy that is bringing Evangelion Unit-02 and its fiery pilot, Asuka Langley Souryuu, to Japan. Ryouji Kaji, Misato's former love interest, is assigned to escort Asuka. Following some uncomfortable introductions, the convoy comes under assault from a gigantic aquatic Angel.
