Steve, a room service attendant concealing his illiteracy, grapples with both personal and professional challenges. Forced to leave school at eight to support his family, his son Rob struggles to accept Steve's secret. When Steve declines a promotion and attempts to resign, his boss Peter insists on enrolling him in remedial classes instead. Meanwhile, Peter's ex-wife Janet arrives seeking assistance in securing a job. Despite their amicable relationship, Christine grows jealous of Peter's attention to Janet. A confrontation reveals that Janet is unable to pass the required physical exam due to a terminal illness, leaving her with no one but Peter to rely on.
