Ben finds himself at odds with Tom when he becomes an advocate for Maureen Ritchie and her three foster children, particularly the two boys, Scott and Jason. His connection to Maureen deepens as he feels the absence of his own three kids, especially with his son's birthday approaching. Despite Tom and Maggie's warnings to tread lightly, Ben's anger boils over when Maureen's neighbor, Herbert Fisher, is robbed and the boys are blamed. With a history of vandalism in the area and Herbert's ongoing vendetta against them, Ben suspects he’s trying to orchestrate their removal from Maureen’s care. Complicating matters, Ben and Maggie learn that Maureen’s estranged husband, Joe, also has motives for wanting the boys gone.
