J. Jimerson Jones (Pat O'Brien) discovers a rich gold vein, and as he heads to Chicago to revel in his newfound wealth, he crosses paths with Judge Garth and his daughter Betsy. Upon arriving in the city, the Garths encounter aspiring young reporter Eddie Tighe (David Macklin), while Jones strikes up a friendship with middle-aged hotel maid Maggie Hyeth (Ann Doran). Soon, Jones attracts the attention of swindlers, while Tighe pursues Betsy, leading to a series of comical and chaotic situations.
